Content, copy, communication
My content and communications background
This is the bit where I tell you about me, and my experience as a freelance content writer and copywriter. Ironically, even though I’m a time-served communications specialist, I really struggle to write about myself. Frankly, it gives me the ick. Preamble aside, I’ve been freelancing for almost 20 years but writing for much longer, falling into copywriting by (happy) accident rather than design.
From fanzine to freelance
I devoured books from a young age (literary not literally) and writing was always my ‘thing’. I could comprehend information and concepts quickly, and articulate myself well. I studied media, art and psychology at college, working with a music promoter in my spare time, stage-managing gigs and interviewing bands (including Radiohead!) for his local fanzine.
As a teenager, this heightened my love of writing, and I expanded my skills in a more formal environment as co-director of the family window company, taking over all marketing and business communications at 18 years old. During this time, I was often poached by other businesses who’d heard about my skills.
Moving to Tanzania in my 20s, I volunteered at an international school, creating educational materials, communications and press releases. On my return, I wrote on a freelance basis for various friends and contacts – with an emphasis on the ‘free’. Following an opportunity to work with a web designer, I found a geeky passion for SEO and user experience, and decided to launch Advanced Writing Solutions.
Writing specialisms and sectors
As a freelance writer I’ve worked closely with myriad creative agencies in the UK and internationally, helping to build brands, strategies, websites, campaigns and many other awesome projects, across a range of industries.
From small start-ups, to SMEs and regulatory bodies, I can turn my tone and talents to pretty much anything.
From London, to Leeds, to sunny Spain
London-born but with itchy feet, I found myself honing my career as a freelance copywriter and content writer in Leeds for many years, before moving to the Orihuela Costa in Spain in 2024.
I still charge my clients in GBP and work UK business hours, and I’m always happy to travel for meetings if required (and viable).
As a communications specialist, I’m a real relationships person. So, while I’m always happy to jump into ad-hoc copywriting projects, I do love the additional value I can offer working as part of an extended team.
